How To Sell a Car

  • Research the market value of the car you want to sell.  If you price your car too high, no one will buy your car.  If you price it too low, you can loose money on the deal.  If that happens you will experience sellers remorse.
  • Make sure your car is Clean.  I cannot emphasize this enough.  Nobody wants to buy a dirty car. When a person buys a car, they want it to be shiny and clean.
  • Make sure the car is in good running condition.  If you have minor automotive problems, the get them fixed.  If your tires are in bad shape, go buy new tires.  If your windshield is busted, pay the money to get it fixed. Most people do not want to buy a car they have to work on.
  • Once your car is clean and in good running condition, keep it that way… That way you are ready to sell your car anytime a car buyer is interested.

Sell Your Car Online

By far, the best place to sell a car is on web sites that specialize in putting car buyers in contact with people who are trying to sell their car.  The benefits of such sites are the seller can post photos and a description.  People that are looking to buy a car can look at what the seller has to offer right from their computer.  The benefit to the seller is that the seller is now advertising to a much wider audience.  For example, I live in Oklahoma.  I put a truck for sale on a website and a guy from Kansas drove over six hours to buy the truck on the spot.

One of the best sites I’ve ever used is Autotrader.com.  I have easily bought and sold over twenty vehicle from their site.  They have been in business for a very long time and are experts on How to Sell a Car.  If your wanting to sell you car online, then I would give them serious consideration.

The second traditional option is to sell a car privately.  You can a decent price if you have priced your car at a fair market value.  Here are Some of the best ways to sell your car locally.

  • Put an advertisement in your local newspaper

Sell Your Car at an Online Auction

I have never tried this but I have many friends who buy and sell their vehicles on sites like eBay.  They swear it is the best way to buy or sell any car.  The benefits of selling your car on an auction site is that you get a lot of the same benefits of a site that helps sell cars.  In addition you have people all over the country that are bidding on the car your selling.  This can drastically increase your final sales price.

One word of caution I would give is to take your time and learn as much as you can before trying to sell your car on an auction site.  There are things that a seller will have to pay for… such as a vehicle inspection, shipping, and you will most likely have to pay a percentage of what the car sells for.
